Ledger Hardware Wallet Setup Information
About Ledger Hardware Wallets
Ledger hardware wallets are physical devices designed to securely store cryptocurrency private keys offline. These devices provide enhanced security compared to software wallets by keeping sensitive information isolated from internet-connected devices.
Important: The setup process described here is for informational purposes only. Always follow the official instructions provided with your Ledger device and on the official Ledger website.
General Setup Process Information
When you receive a Ledger device, carefully inspect the packaging for signs of tampering. The device should be sealed and include all expected accessories.
Ledger Live is the official companion application for managing your Ledger device. It can be downloaded from the official Ledger website and is available for desktop and mobile platforms.
During initialization, you'll set up a PIN code to protect physical access to your device. This PIN should be unique and known only to you.
The device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is critically important for recovering your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged.
Ledger Live allows you to install applications for different cryptocurrencies onto your device. These applications enable you to manage various crypto assets securely.
Security Considerations
Hardware wallets like Ledger devices provide significant security advantages by keeping private keys isolated from internet-connected devices. However, proper security practices are essential:
- Always purchase devices from official sources to avoid tampered hardware
- Never share your recovery phrase with anyone
- Store your recovery phrase securely offline
- Keep your device firmware updated
- Verify receiving addresses on the device screen
Security Reminder: Ledger devices will never ask for your recovery phrase. Any website, application, or person requesting your recovery phrase is attempting to steal your funds.
